Looking for media interview training in Leicester or Leicestershire?
You need a media guru!
Our media interview course is led by an East Midlands-based media expert with experience as both a BBC journalist in the East Midlands and as media manager for a national charity.
The course will help your spokespeople overcome their trepidations about TV, radio and podcast interviews using tried-and-tested techniques.
They’ll soon have the confidence to make the most of media opportunities from BBC Radio Leicester, East Midlands Today, Central News or one of the community stations in Leicester.
The course teaches communications skills that can be used by charities, businesses or public sector organisations - and we can deliver it anywhere in Leicester or the rest of Leicestershire.

What does the training course cover?
Our one day broadcast interview training course typically runs from 10am – 4pm and follows our tried-and-tested four-step structure.
We aim to build confidence in using media, rather than leaving people feeling more worried than when they arrived!
Our specialism is in regional and local television and radio, but the principles of good communication covered in the course can also be applied to national broadcast interviews.
-
A chance to discuss your experiences and (understandable!) fears about broadcast interviews. We’ll also cover the different types of interview and how you should prepare differently.
-
Our 10 top tips on preparing for an interview, including how to deal with questions you don’t know the answer to – or would rather not answer!
-
Radio interview practice based around a real life media opportunity for your business, charity or local authority. We will work with you ahead of the training day to make it as relevant as possible. Each person is given individual feedback - in a supportive and constructive environment.
-
TV interview practice building on what we've learnt from the radio interviews, along with some advice on how to approach TV opportunities.
How much does the media training cost?
We charge a fixed price per group of £796 + VAT for a one day course. The price is the same regardless of how many people are on the course - but we recommend a group of 3 - 5 people.
For a group of four, our price works out as £199 + VAT per delegate. We can tweak the course for smaller and larger groups, but we’ve found that 3 - 5 people creates the best learning environment.
Our price is considerably lower than many other broadcast interview training courses – many of whom charge several hundred pounds per person.
To keep our prices affordable we ask you to provide the venue, such as a meeting room - and we don’t provide lunch (although we will bring some snacks and allow time for a lunch break). We provide unedited recordings of the day’s interviews for free.
Where is the training held?
We come to your workplace and can deliver the training in any meeting room that is big enough for about six people (we need a bit of space for our professional-grade filming equipment).
We are based in the East Midlands so don’t charge any travel expenses, wherever you are in Leicestershire. We can run the course in Leicester, Loughborough, Melton Mowbray, Hinckley, Market Harborough, Ashby-de-la-Zouch or anywhere else in the county.
Our media course is led by Robbie Lane, who has experience on both sides of the microphone.
Over the last two decades, he has interviewed two Prime Ministers for the BBC and been interviewed live on the East Midlands Today sofa for a national charity. He’s also appeared on radio stations in Leicester, including community stations and BBC Radio Leicester.
Hannah Lane is co-director of Guru Media Training. She is a skilled administrator and supports with the practical side of the business thanks to several years in hotel management and HR in Nottingham and Lincolnshire.
About us - our experience
-
I have worked as a newsreader and local radio reporter for commercial radio stations and BBC local radio. I was breakfast show editor on BBC Radio Derby, during which time the station was named Station of the Year at the main industry awards.
During that time I interviewed two Prime Ministers, one Chancellor of the Exchequer and five members of Girls Aloud.
-
I was media manager for a large national charity, covering several regions including the East Midlands. During this time, I created a broadcast media training course for our team of regional media officers and rolled it out across the country. I worked with staff in our Leicester office, as well as other locations around the East Midlands.
I also regularly appeared on TV and radio to represent the charity, including on BBC East Midlands Today and BBC Radio Leicester. My interview experience tackled positive stories about new research and fundraising events, as well as reputational risk interviews about service closures. -
In the last few years, I have been running my own media company with a focus on tourism – my sites include Isle of Wight Guru, as well as Dutch, German and French language travel sites.
I regularly appear on local BBC radio to promote this work.
I am also the founder of the Brown Flag Awards, which is a campaign for cleaner beaches that has featured in the Daily Mail, The Sun, The Express, The Mirror and on the BBC.
