Expert-led broadcast interview training in the East Midlands, London and beyond

Broadcast media interview training is a valuable investment for your charity, public sector organisation or business.

Our one day course will help your spokespeople make the most of every TV, radio and podcast opportunity – rather than fearing them.

The course is led by a former BBC journalist and media manager for a national charity. He’s worked as interviewer and interviewee over the last two decades and will teach you the tricks of the trade.

We mostly work in London and the East Midlands, but we can also deliver the course in parts of East Anglia and the West Midlands. See our location section for more details.

Our prices are transparent and simple – and we believe we offer exceptionally good value, with prices from £199 + VAT per delegate.

What does the course cover?

Our one day broadcast interview training course typically runs from 10am – 4pm and follows our tried-and-tested four-step structure.

We aim to build confidence in using media, rather than leaving people feeling more worried than when they arrived!

Our specialism is in regional and local television and radio, but the principles of good communication covered in the course can also be applied to national broadcast interviews.

  • A chance to discuss your experiences and (understandable!) fears about broadcast interviews. We’ll also cover the different types of interview and how you should prepare differently.

  • Our 10 top tips on preparing for an interview, including how to deal with questions you don’t know the answer to – or would rather not answer!

  • Radio interview practice based around a real life media opportunity for your business, charity or public sector organisation (e.g. local authority, NHS etc). We will work with you ahead of the training day to make it as relevant as possible. Each person is given individual feedback - in a supportive and constructive environment.

  • TV interview practice building on what we've learnt from the radio interviews, along with some advice on how to approach TV opportunities.

How much does it cost?

We charge a fixed price per group of £796 + VAT for a one day course. The price is the same regardless of how many people are on the course - but we recommend a group of 3 - 5 people.

For a group of four, our price works out as £199 + VAT per delegate. We can tweak the course for smaller and larger groups, but we’ve found that 3 - 5 people creates the best learning environment.

Our price is considerably lower than many other broadcast interview training courses – many of whom charge several hundred pounds per person.

To keep our prices affordable we ask you to provide the venue, such as a meeting room - and we don’t provide lunch (although we will bring some snacks and allow time for a lunch break). We provide unedited recordings of the day’s interviews for free.

Where is the training held?

We come to you. We just need a room large enough for about six people. We’ll bring all the equipment required including professional recording equipment and lighting.

Our base is in the East Midlands but we also travel to London and some parts of East Anglia, the Home Counties and the West Midlands.

We don’t charge any travel expenses if you are within one of these areas:

Derby, Leicestershire (Leicester, Loughborough etc), Lincolnshire (Lincoln, Boston, Skegness etc), Northamptonshire (Northampton, Kettering, Corby etc), Nottinghamshire (Nottingham, Mansfield, Newark etc), Peterborough and Rutland.

We also cover these cities and towns, but charge a one-off extra of £99 + VAT to cover our travel and accommodation expenses:

London, Birmingham, Cambridge, Coventry, Doncaster, Grimsby, Leeds, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Sheffield and York.

If you are outside of these areas, please get in touch. We may be able to make it work!

The course is led by me - Robbie Lane. Unusually, I have professional experience on both sides of the microphone, working as a BBC broadcast journalist, a media manager and campaigner for a national charity and running my own media company over the last 19 years.

My wife, Hannah, is co-director of Guru Media Ltd. She is a skilled administrator and supports with the practical side of the business thanks to several years in hotel management and HR.

About us

  • I have worked as a newsreader and local radio reporter for commercial radio stations and BBC local radio. I was breakfast show editor on a local BBC radio station that won station of the year three times during my time at the station.

During that time I interviewed two Prime Ministers, one Chancellor of the Exchequer and five members of Girls Aloud.

  • I was media manager for a large national health charity, covering a number of regions including the East Midlands, East Anglia and the West Midlands. During this time I created a broadcast media training course for our team of regional media officers.

I also regularly appeared on TV and radio to represent the charity. My interview experience tackled positive stories about new research and fundraising events, as well as reputational risk interviews about service closures.

In another role, I worked as part of the communications team for a national environmental charity. This role focused on the charity’s partnerships with household-name retailers and other businesses.

  • In the last few years, I have been running my own media company with a focus on tourism – my sites include Isle of Wight Guru, as well as Dutch, German and French language travel sites.

I regularly appear on local BBC radio to promote this work - discussing thrilling topics such as the best benches on the Isle of Wight.

I am also the founder of the Brown Flag Awards, which is a campaign for cleaner beaches that has featured in the Daily Mail, The Sun, The Express, The Mirror and on the BBC.
