Outstanding Media Training in Birmingham

Struggling to make the most of TV, radio and podcast interview opportunities?

You need Guru Media Training!

We offer broadcast interview courses in Birmingham for charities, public sector bodies and businesses that want to get themselves noticed - for the right reasons.

The course is run by an ex-BBC radio journalist, who has experience on both sides of the microphone. He’s interviewed Prime Ministers and he’s also been interviewed on live TV, during a decade spent in the charity sector.

He’ll teach you the 10 steps to broadcast interview success - and give you a chance to try out your new knowledge.

We believe that media training should be encouraging rather than terrifying and build on your natural presentation skills.

Our prices are some of the most competitive you will find and we offer free unedited recordings of your interviews.

What does your Birmingham media training course cover?

We’ll teach you how to make the most of a TV, radio or podcast interview by teaching you tricks of the trade - and then giving you some valuable practice and feedback.

The course runs from 10am - 4pm and follows a four step structure, with time for both TV and radio interviews.

We specialise in regional and local TV and radio interviews but many of the skills you will learn can also be applied to national media opportunities and to more general presentations.

  • A chance to discuss your experiences and (understandable!) fears about broadcast interviews. We’ll also cover the different types of interview and how you should prepare differently.

  • Our 10 top tips on preparing for an interview, including how to deal with questions you don’t know the answer to – or would rather not answer!

  • Radio interview practice based around a real life media opportunity for your charity. We will work with you ahead of the training day to make it as relevant as possible. Each person is given individual feedback - in a supportive and constructive environment.

  • TV interview practice building on what we've learnt from the radio interviews, along with some advice on how to approach TV opportunities.

How much do you charge for media training in Birmingham

We charge a fixed price per group of £796 + VAT for a one day course. The price is the same regardless of how many people are on the course - but we recommend a group of 3 - 5 people.

For a group of four, our price works out as £199 + VAT per delegate. We can tweak the course for smaller and larger groups, but we’ve found that 3 - 5 people creates the best learning environment.

We also charge one off flat-fee of £99 + VAT to cover our travel expenses. This extra fee is per group rather than per person.

Our price is considerably lower than many other broadcast interview training courses – many of whom charge several hundred pounds per person.

To keep our prices affordable we ask you to provide the venue, such as a meeting room - and we don’t provide lunch (although we will bring some snacks and allow time for a lunch break). We provide unedited recordings of the day’s interviews for free.

Where do you hold the training?

We come to your office or workplace in Birmingham. You provide the venue and we will bring our professional recording equipment and lighting.

This setup is how most media interviews take place and it also helps us keep our costs as competitive as possible.

We are based in the East Midlands and spent a number of years working across the East and West Midlands (including Birmingham).

The course is led by Robbie Lane, who was a radio journalist for the BBC in the East Midlands. He’s interviewed politicians and celebrities as well as hundreds of local charities, businesses and council leaders.

He has also worked in the media teams for two national charities and has been on the receiving end of dozens of interviews with TV and radio journalists.

Hannah Lane provides valuable practical support to Guru Media Training. She has worked in hotel management and in HR and keeps the business running smoothly.

About Guru Media Training

  • Robbie worked as a newsreader and local radio reporter for commercial radio stations in the Westcountry and BBC local radio in the East Midlands. He was breakfast show editor on BBC Radio Derby, during which time the station was named Station of the Year at the main radio industry awards.

During that time he interviewed two Prime Ministers, one Chancellor of the Exchequer and five members of Girls Aloud.

  • Robbie was media manager for a large national health charity and created a broadcast media training course for the team of regional media officers. This was delivered across England and Wales. He was media manager across several regions, including Birmingham and the West Midlands.

He also regularly appeared on TV and radio to represent the charity. Some of this work was tackling positive stories about new research and fundraising events whilst others was reputational risk interviews about service closures.

He also worked for a national environmental charity in a communications role as part of their corporate partnerships team.

  • In the last few years, Robbie and Hannah have been running their own media company with a focus on tourism – their sites include Isle of Wight Guru, as well as Dutch, German and French language travel sites.

Robbie regularly appears on local BBC radio to promote this work.

He is also the founder of the Brown Flag Awards, which is an environmental campaign for cleaner beaches that has featured in the Birmingham Mail, Daily Mail, The Sun, The Express, The Mirror and on the BBC.
